Contributing

The options documented here apply to the Side Menu -> Contribute page, available via the side menu.

Why Contribute?

RecipeSage is both open source and free to use. My desire is to keep it that way.

I built the platform as a solution to host my family's recipes & shopping lists (specifically, for my mother!), but wanted to share the platform with others who might find it useful. This isn't my job - I'm a software engineer for Mozilla at the moment, but you can read more about me 📱 here.

I do impose a few limitations on the features within RecipeSage only where necessary to make it feasible for me to host financially. It's not my goal to make money off of RecipeSage, but I also can't afford to lose tons of money either! Asking for contributions is the best way for me to keep RecipeSage available for free for all, while covering costs of hosting the platform.

How to Contribute

To contribute, open the contribute page via the side menu. Click either monthly or one-time and select a dollar amount. You can also enter an arbitrary amount.

Choosing a one-time contribution will unlock the bonus features mentioned below for one year.

Bonus Features

There are several bonus features that unlock when you contribute. These features are limited to contributors only because they're particularly costly to host. These bonus features will stay unlocked as long as you're a monthly contributor, or for one year if you choose to contribute one time.

Currently, the bonus features that are unlocked by contributing are:

Usage Limits

I do not impose any limits on the core functionality of RecipeSage. It's intentional that the app remain free to use.

That said, over the years many people have requested a few features that are particularly costly to host. Because of this, I've placed some reasonable limits on a handful of features which fall into this category.

Please keep in mind that these limits only apply to these features. Creating recipes, meal plans, and shopping lists, or any other features that might come to mind remain entirely unlimited.

Here's the outline of what these limits are:

Cooking credits are only consumed when an operation actually succeeds. Failed imports, broken links, or unparseable content do not count against your daily allowance.

Cooking credits reset every day at 0:00 GMT. You can view your current usage on the settings page.

There are no currently enforced recipe limits, however RecipeSage reserves the right to take action against abuse. There are many users with more than 40,000 recipes in their account, which equates to 109 years of cooking if you cook one recipe a day. In other words, you should not be concerned with any recipe count limit.
